West Side Story-Gym Mambo

  1. This video was inspired by Robbins family members, who would regulary go to social clubs like this to dance. The style sometimes looks as if it has been inspired by Fosse's choroegraphy from the film 'Damn Yankees', 'who's got the pain' duet. There is a lot of partner work within this scene, and the choreography has a lot of fast and vibrant dynamics , which sometimes contrast into slow and softer dynamics. I love how the choreography is high and energetic, and the different levels are spell binding. You just don't want to take yours off the scene in case you miss anything. The Portirican women, use a lot of hip movement whilst dancing, and in general Robbins uses more of the bottom half of the body than the top. Having said that, Robbins has obtained a lot of high kicks, turns, and twists within his choreography, to explore the different ways in which the body can envelope movement. Most of the movement is shsrp however, with the dancers that he has used it looks effortless.
