It is clear that the costume ideas for West Side Story were influenced by the current Fashion trends in the 1950s. This typical 1950s dress, was a popular choice for the women. It compliments the figure through the straight neck, which broadens the shoulders, and then the A-shaped fall of the dress. Anita's dress has a similar shaped dress. I think she was made to wear dresses like this, to add eloquence to her movements, so that every line or hip movement of her body was seen. The colour of her dress,and the dresses that her friends wear in West side Story, are very exotic colours, which compliment their skin tone, and reflect their cultural background, through the warm tones of their clothing.
